    FOOD ITEMS THAT TRIGGER ACID REFLUX

    Lower esophageal sphincter(LES) is a ring of muscles situated at the entrance of your stomach.Normally the LES closes as soon as food passes through it.But if the LES starts misfunctioningi.e. if it opens too often or doesn’t close then the acid produced by your stomach can move up into your esophagus.Most common symptom of acid reflux is heartburn and if the symptoms happen more than twice a week then you are suffering from a disease called gastroesophageal reflux(GERD) also known as acid reflux disease.
    There are many factors that trigger acid reflux among which eating large meals and certain foods are very common.Too much of these food can cause stomach to produce too much acid which can back up into the esophagus, and thus eliminating them from your diet is necessary. Some of these food items are:
    1.TOMATOES:
    Tomatoes and tomato-based foods contain high levels of acid and relax the lower esophageal sphincter muscles in the same way chocolate does.Food such as marinara sauce,ketchup and tomato soup should be avoided.Even the caffeinated drinks cause heartburn and trigger acid reflux symptoms.Even cooking tomatoes does not reduce the acid level therefore its of no use.
    2. CITRUS FRUITS:
    Due to increase in acid intake the symptoms like coughing and hoarseness can trouble you and therefore youshould try to put a check on the amount of citrus fruits you consume.The ph level of citrus fruits is very low i.e. they are very much acidic in nature.Intake of lemon juice is equivalent to intake of gastric acid.Thus avoid eating fruits such as oranges,grapefruits and instead of them you could try pineapple.
    3. ONIONS:
    Onions must be avoided all the more.It could increase heartburn and belching.If you are not able to avoid it altogether then you can try green onions but in lesser quantity and check how they affect your reflux.
    4. CARBONATED BEVERAGES:
    The bubbles in these drinks affect your LES and thus leading to symptoms like heartburn as the gas released from these beverages increases gastric pressure.Diet sodas should be avoided all the more as they have a very low ph level.
    5. ALCOHOL:
    Drinking affects the LES and lets the gastric acids to enter esophagus causing heartburn.If you really cannot quit drinking then try to avoid beer,champagne,acidic juices and carbonated sodas.
    6. CHOCOLATE:
    It contains caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine.It is high in fat that triggers acid reflux.
    These food items according to researches trigger acid reflux but it depends on different peoplehow much they affect them and thus it is recommended to consult a doctor.
